Summer temperatures may bring welcome warmth, but extreme or prolonged heat can be dangerous for your health. Furthermore, air conditioning may not always be available to help you cool off. Whether it’s because of a power outage, a desire to save on your energy bill or simply because you don’t have it, knowing how to manage high temperatures without air conditioning can be essential.
Keep cool and comfortable, and limit stiflingly hot conditions by implementing the following strategies:
1. Hydrate
Even if you don’t feel thirsty, staying hydrated is critical during hot weather. Your body cools itself by sweating, but cannot do so if you’re dehydrated. Additionally, avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
2. Reduce energy consumption
Lamps, appliances, and other electric devices can generate considerable heat. Unplug appliances and devices that you’re not using and consider switching to LED light bulbs, as they create less heat than their incandescent counterparts.
3. Wash up
Immersing yourself in a cool bath or stepping into a cold shower can help lower your body temperature.
4. Ventilate
Use box fans to blow hot air outside and exhaust fans to remove it from bathrooms and kitchens. Fans can also be set up near windows to bring in cooler nighttime air. If you can tell which direction the wind is blowing from, open windows on that side of your home and create a cross breeze.
5. Cover windows
Close blinds and curtains to limit the greenhouse effect during the day, especially when it’s sunny outside. Outdoor awnings can also be helpful for blocking sunlight from heating your home.
6. Limit indoor appliance use
Ovens and clothes dryers exude heat. Plan to use these machines at night when temperatures are cooler. Alternatively, hang your laundry outside instead of using your dryer and grill outdoors instead of cooking in the kitchen.
7. Stick to lower levels
Hot air rises, so you may be able to enjoy cooler conditions by staying on the first floor of your home or heading down to the basement.
